Why farming needs better information, not just more effort

African agriculture has never lacked effort. Across the continent, farmers prepare land, plant, weed, manage pests, and move harvests through difficult conditions, often with limited capital and little room for error.

Yet effort, however necessary, is not a strategy.

A farmer may work from morning until night and still plant at the wrong time, apply the wrong input, overlook the first signs of disease, or produce for a market that is already oversupplied. Commitment is rarely the issue. Outcomes depend on decisions made while weather, prices, pests, cash flow, and demand are all moving.

The challenge for African agriculture is to turn enormous human effort into more reliable outcomes. Timely, relevant information gives farmers a stronger basis for action and improves the value of the work they already do.

Hard work cannot compensate for uncertainty

Every farming season contains decisions that look small but can change the final result.

Before planting, a farmer must decide what to grow, when to begin, how much land to use, which seed to buy and whether the available cash can carry the farm through the season. During production, the decisions shift to nutrients, irrigation, labour, pest control and the timing of each intervention. Near harvest, the questions become different again: when to harvest, how to protect quality, where to sell, how to transport the produce and whether the price will cover the real cost.

Hard work carries these decisions into the field, but it cannot guarantee that they are sound.

That distinction is too often lost in public conversations about productivity. Farmers are urged to do more when the real constraint may be an information gap, a delayed warning, poor coordination, or no affordable way to act on good advice.

Information is plentiful, but decision support remains scarce

Farmers already receive information from input dealers, extension agents, other farmers, social media, weather forecasts, buyers and family experience. The difficulty is deciding which guidance applies to a particular crop, field, stage of the season, and financial situation.

Generic advice can be useful for learning, but it becomes risky when treated as a precise instruction.

A recommendation that works for rice in one production system may not fit another soil, season, or farmer’s access to water and inputs. A weather forecast is only useful when a farmer understands what action it should trigger. A market price from a distant city may be misleading after transport, handling losses, and buyer requirements are considered.

Useful decision support answers four questions:

  • What is happening?
  • Why does it matter here?
  • What action is realistic now?
  • What evidence or support is needed before acting?

Simply sending more messages to farmers falls well short of this standard.

What evidence from Nigeria tells us

A randomized study of rice farmers in Nigeria tested personalised nutrient guidance against a control group. The researchers reported that farmers who received personalised recommendations achieved roughly 7 percent higher yields and 10 percent higher profits.

The result is encouraging, although the study’s limits matter.

The study concerned rice farmers under specific conditions. It does not prove that every digital advisory service will produce the same outcome. The effects were also stronger when farmers received the recommended fertiliser, showing that advice is only useful when people have the resources to act on it.

The research points to a connected system of information, finance, inputs, timing and execution. When one part is missing, a farmer may understand what to do without having a viable way to do it.

Timing and local relevance matter

Weather information illustrates this clearly.

FAO research in Zambia found that farmers who received drought-related seasonal forecasts were more likely to use drought-tolerant crops and improved maize seed. Yet access to forecasts was limited, and farmers’ ability to respond was influenced by market access.

An accurate warning can still fail the farmer. It must arrive early enough, use familiar language, and point to an available choice. A forecast offers little protection when suitable seed cannot be found or financed.

Across West Africa, digital advisory programmes increasingly combine climate information with extension support, local-language delivery and links to other services. Their design reflects a practical reality: advice becomes more useful when it is connected to the wider support a farmer needs.

Trust is agricultural infrastructure

Farmers are right to assess recommendations before acting on them.

They consider the source, past experience, the cost of being wrong, and whether the advice reflects local conditions. A systematic review of digital agricultural services in low- and middle-income countries identified trust, digital literacy and ease of use among the recurring factors that shape adoption.

Human support remains important. Extension officers, experienced farmers, agronomists, producer organisations and trusted local institutions help people interpret information and challenge recommendations that do not fit.

Digital advice works best when it draws on credible data, respects local experience and reaches farmers through people and institutions they trust.

Farm records turn experience into learning

Farmers also generate useful evidence through their day-to-day work.

Planting dates, input applications, labour costs, weather observations, crop-health incidents, harvest quantities, buyer feedback and selling prices can show what actually happened. Without records, each season is easily reduced to memory and general impressions.

Records help a farmer answer practical questions:

  • Which crop or variety performed better?
  • Which field repeatedly had a problem?
  • What did production truly cost?
  • Did a treatment improve the result?
  • Which buyer paid reliably?
  • What should change next season?

Good record-keeping preserves the lessons from each season and gives the next one a stronger starting point.

Better information must connect to action

The strongest agricultural information systems do more than collect data or send alerts. They help people move from uncertainty to a realistic next step.

That may mean connecting a forecast to a planting decision, a crop symptom to qualified advice, a record to a cost comparison or a market signal to a harvest and logistics plan. It may also mean stating clearly when the available evidence is weak, and a farmer should seek further help before spending money.

Technology can reduce the friction involved in organising these decisions. It cannot replace secure access to land, affordable finance, reliable inputs, infrastructure, skilled support or viable markets.

Platforms that ignore these conditions present a misleadingly simple picture of farming.

Standard agricultural technology must meet

FarmGuide takes a practical view: better farming begins with better decisions. Farmers need information that is timely, locally relevant, easy to interpret, and connected to action.

The value of agricultural technology should be measured by the decisions it helps farmers make. A useful tool supports planning, reliable records and a clearer understanding of risk, while showing when expert or market support is needed.

Software will not remove every risk from farming. It can, however, help ensure that effort is guided by stronger evidence and that each season contributes to the next.

African agriculture will always demand hard work. The more urgent task is to ensure that knowledge, institutions and technology help more of that work count.
